How smart energy monitoring works
Understand the reading before deciding what to automate.
Power, energy, current and voltage
Power describes the rate of electricity use in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). Energy accumulates over time in kilowatt-hours (kWh): a steady 1 kW load for one hour uses 1 kWh. Current is measured in amperes (A), voltage in volts (V). A current reading alone is not an energy total; power factor and measurement method also matter.
Switching and measuring are different
A smart switch can turn a supported load on or off without measuring it. Choose a monitoring model when you need documented current, voltage, power or energy readings. The Lite version of a product can have different features.
Match the measurement method
An inline meter and a current-transformer installation have different requirements. Ask a qualified installer to match the exact model, voltage, circuit arrangement and ratings. Do not treat a clamp accessory as a complete smart meter.
Use the data thoughtfully
Compare consumption over a meaningful period and account for your tariff and household use. A measured reduction is more useful than a promised percentage. Confirm which readings your chosen integration exposes.
