Wi-Fi, Zigbee or Matter?
Three names you’ll see everywhere. Here’s what they mean for your home.
Wi-Fi: a familiar place to start
A Wi-Fi device joins your wireless network. Many SONOFF Wi-Fi models use eWeLink without a separate Zigbee hub. Check the model’s network requirements and whether its control needs the internet.
Zigbee: build a network
Zigbee sensors and switches communicate with a coordinator. A compatible coordinator is required; your Wi-Fi router cannot replace it. Battery devices are usually end devices. Suitable powered devices can extend the mesh, but check each model.
Matter: a shared language
Matter is an application protocol, not a radio. Matter-over-Wi-Fi products need Wi-Fi and a compatible Matter controller. Thread products additionally need a Thread border router. Confirm exact model and controller support.
